The Kid Who Found Better
Description:
Around 1994, I was inspired to write and illustrate a children's story which would express my own views of optimism, and bring in some fantastical solution. It was to be uplifting, but it also reflected the world I saw in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles and Hollywood - not the ones you see in images, but the gritty reality of street life.
I had done several stories by this time, but was still experimenting with reproduction techniques. Mostly, this was in the preliminary days of desktop publishing and I was not connected to any art studio, but rather employed at a low-paying corporation. This book also gave me some relief from the hum-drum daily activities and allowe me to create something hopeful.
Format:
These were drawn and inked with a combination of traditional pen and ink, as well as markers. Grays were created with illustration pencils and wax crayon-pencils. All were reproduced at letter-size by xerox. The original text was printed out on dot-matrix, which pages were used for this set of scans. These were assembled in a PDF in order to be published online for your use.
Methods:
Pen/ink, Illustrator pencils, wax crayons, b/w xerox, dot-matrix printer.
