Mexico Goat Meets His End

Idioms, Cartoons, Humorous DrawingsDescription:

In 2010, there was a phenomenon with brought international attention to Mexico, Missouri. Someone had let loose a male goat, which took up residence in the town. The local pet control people didn't have the resources to capture him, so he kept showing up and getting away. It was summer, so he had plenty to eat.

Someone started a Facebook page, and media took this up. Soon he had more fans than there were residents in the town. Shortly, an employee at the local stockyards got out his horse and lasso and caught him. And the question was what to do with him. This is where the cartoon picks up.

By this time, I was working with a workflow that was mostly computer-facilitated. I was doing the key artwork by hand, scanning it in and then pulling this into CorelDraw to create the images. This also enabled me to use various other graphics and photos as well. The use of "My Flyover Zone" was to create an ongoing series, but these ended as the situation with the Mexico Goat resolved.

The test of this showed it to be labor-intensive, but produced some incredible effects compared to the cut/paste techiniques I'd worked with earlier. It also forecast my current methods of using vector-based graphic programs for cartooning.

Format:

Outside of the initial artwork, this was entirely computer generated. It was posted online on a blog. (And actually, I never printed out a full color copy.)

Methods:

Computer scanned images, colorized in computer programs.
